With the help of the fluorescense, materials and parts can be examined for hair-cracks. Black glass emitters produce invisible light in the wavelength coverage of approx. 365nm. This radiation energizes, in connection with special liquids, the fluorescense-effect and the hair-cracks becomes optically visible.
